Hey Tracey Ann... can you describe what you are doing? And which version of inkscape you are using and on what operating system?

I just created an oval... and some text, selected them both by click-dragging around both objects and then choosing Put on Path from the text menu. No need to hold down any keys...

Or are you doing something different?

Hello, Donna

You just need to select both text and oval shape and then press Put on Path.
then you can play with alignment and in-out placing by changing the
anchor node position and flipping/rotating the oval.

cheers, Oleg

TraceyAnn - did you edit the description?

Create your text, create a square. Select both.
Choose Text -> Flow into frame (Alt+W)
