Is there an eraser in inkscape.Is so where is it

The eraser is 12 icons down on the left hand toolbar below the calligraphy pen tool.

Also you cannot specifically erase like an image editing program such as gimp. You can cut paths and remove the desired segment which would be closest to erasing and area or part of your drawing.
