Well. I had that problem too.

There are some solutions:

1. You could hide top Gnome panel with buttons at edges.
2. You could switch window manager to Metacity (since it is known as Compiz problem) - type in Terminal: metacity --replace (for switch on Compiz again - compiz --replace)
3. The most preferable solution - Install development version of Inkscape (or wait for 15 June for 0.47) - cause in 0.46dev version that problem seems to be eliminated

Hope some solution will work for you.

Thankyou for your mail. I switched to Metacity and the "jump" problem s
e e m s to have gone away, however, though all actions work OK at first,
after a while Inkscape becomes unresponsive in some respects; for
example in File, Document Properties I managed to change the Grid
sizing, then changed from Grid to Page to get rid of the page border -
could not select the "no border" box. I could click on the heading s
boxes and get back to Grid but was then unable to change any box there
(though I had been able to do so at first.
Inkscape gradually responds again after some time.
Regards, Ray

Well, Ray - try to install development version.
It could be done through Launchpad easily - please follow that link -

Thank you Oleg, (sorry I addressed you by surname earlier!)
Have printed out the instructions - 6 pages! Just hope I don't make a
mess of it!
Will speak again after I've installed it, probably tomorrow for I have
an appointment tonight.

Devel version now successfully installed, thank you for your help. Tried again to export bitmap etc, but Photoprint still won't accept the format of the .jpeg file (saved as jpeg by Gimp).
In an attempt to select the drawing A4 page by A4 page I reset the grid to 180mm x 270mm which is more or less the printing area on A4. Hoped that by selecting a 180x270mm area of the drawing that I could print it. Clearly I could not!
I did manage to Ungroup the drawing, and am able to copy individual objects to other new pages (tho' all objects are much larger than A4 size). At one stage had all the nodes displayed (tho' now can't recall how I did it!)
If you follow all this, do you think I'm heading in the right direction?
