large poster printing from Inkscape

Asked by RayArdia

I am trying to print a large .svg image for use as the pattern base for some mosaics. The Inkscape image measures some 500 x 500 millimetres. I have downloaded Photoprint, (pdfposter and poster don't appear in my Add/Remove programs listing). Have tried .svg and .jpeg as sources but Photoprint says format not recognised.
As I can't get it to work I'm clearly doing something wrong!
Using Ubuntu Hardy on 32bit, 2.25GB RAM.
Could use a bit of expert help! Thanks in advance.

Since svg is vector format and Photoprint is raster-based tool I don't see anything strange.
But..as you said you try jpeg also. and it didn't worked. That is strange. By the way - did you try native png export in Inkscape for your images?

Ref:- "did you try native png export " I'm not sure what you mean. I chose FILE, Export Bitmap and followed the instructions.

I mean what you are say. but when you export bitmap it's exported in PNG format, so maybe you simple set extension of file to jpeg? if so - try to rename it to ImageName.PNG instead of ImageName.JPG

No, I saved it as a .png then used Gimp to re-save it as .jpg.
I'm afraid I can't check on that because I now have another problem please see https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/72049
which is preventing me from using Inkscape at all. Can you help with that one?

I answer to your #72049 question.
Also - seems to be that this problem is problem of Photoprint isn't it?

When I get Inkscape to work properly again I will try exporting file to
Gimp, save as jpeg then try Photoprint again.

Well, let's try. Hope all be OK.
But at my POV - this question could be closed. That my thoughts about it:
Inkscape let you render svg like a picture? As I see - yes. After it you even told that you are convert PNG to JPG through GIMP. JPG is basic format with very strict standart, so if Photoprint couldn't handle JPG at your system - that is only problem of your Phitiprint tool. Dunno - that is bug in Photoprint, or smth wrong with your ssystem at all - but that isn't problem of Inkscape in that case.

Thanks Koptev, you've been very patient!
Of course that doesn't solve the problem, just makes it a different one. Since Photoprint has no Help I shall have to ask again via Ubuntu helpline. Maybe there's an alternative to Photoprint.
