how to use an icon SVG template?

I wanted to try to draw icons for the new "Breathe" icon set. I downloaded an SVG template, but i can't draw on it at all. I tried adding a layer, using different shape tools. I've never used Inkscape or any vector graphics editor before....:( Am I aiming too high starting out?

you can't draw on it because the layers are locked.

1.open the layers panel (Shift+Ctrl+L) (or Layer menu>Layers...)
2. unlock the layers by clicking on the padlocks next to them (i think the one you want to unlock is the one named "path/template" and/or "pate"
3. enjoy drawing!
