I have opened a black and white bitmap file. Tracing Bitmaps does not seem to be working. The image is a solid black shape on a white background.

Asked by Photon713

I have a horseshoe in solid black with a white background. I want to find the outer edge of the horseshoe. Can Tracing Bitmaps find the outer edge of the black horseshoe. Must I use a filter to find the outer edge before using Tracing Bitmaps? Thanks

Hi, Photon.

No problem with outer edge of whatever bitmap you have.
Maybe you simply forgot to select your bitmap before applying Trace?
Also - if you want the edge with constant width - you could follow next step:
1. Open bitmap in Inkscape
2. Select it (simply click - the border around image will appear)
3. Trace Bitmap with 'Brightness Cutoff' option (the first one)
4. Select obtained vector, set fill to white (or whatever) and set stroke to black & appropriate width.

Also - if you care - you could read this tutorial - http://www.inkscape.org/doc/tracing/tutorial-tracing.html
And I recommend to you cool free book http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/index.html

Hope I help you.
