Try a recent development version (nightly builds, you can get them at inkscape.org).
Export formats have been improved since inkscape 0.46

You're going to File -> Open, when you need to use File -> Import and then open the file.

Since you're using Inkscape, you should export your vector in .eps (Encapsulated PostScript) and then import it.

Can you help with this problem?
