cutting out the image file

I am wondering if I can cut out the portion of an image file. Cropping only hide them, so the size of the final figure is so big since I am cropping multiple high resolution images and putting them together. If I can cut only the part I want to keep, that will make the file size much smaller. IF anyone can help me how to do in inkscape, that will be very helpful. Thanks for your help in advance.
