Inkscape trying to change font size

HI- i have just installed that latest inkscape and am having trouble with existing files. When i select a text box to do editting, the fontsize box goes straight to 9.6 whateve the actual font size is. I'm having other problems too notably with the pdf's as when i send them to print, it does print but i get an error message about the pdf

I have now found out that the font i have been using Bitstream Vera Sans, sans-serif is not on the new system which i think might be why i am having the problem. is there a way of adding it? or is there something similar i can use that would be on both the new and the old system

Try downloading the font from the creators:

https://www.gnome.org/fonts

On Windows, make sure to install the font by right-clicking on the file and choosing to install for all users, or to install as admin.
