How do I break apart an imported design

Asked by Brenda Middleton

I use EQ6 to design quilt patterns and want to be able to import the design marquee into Inkscape, break it apart into each block component and then export the product to Word to become part of my written pattern. How do I do that? I cannot find any instructions.

When I do import a block design, it is a 'layer' - if this helps!?

Please share an SVG file and tell us what result you want for it.

You need to use a file hosting service, and post a link here. Attachments are not supported.

I would love to do that but have no idea what a file hosting service is, or where to find one. Please advise.

Okay, for what I need..

This is a simple block. The thin black lines show how the pieces are put together. I need to be able to separate that block into individual components.

Hi Brenda,

the file you shared was a png file, probably a screenshot. To be able to help, I need the SVG with vector content. Or is that the original file that you want to edit?

Looks like the program can export a metafile:

This would be better for use with Inkscape.

This is a metafile for a block. It will be good to break it down - which I think can be done with the EQ8 upgrade. However, I do want to be able to break down a whole quilt design, not just one block at a time.

Mmh, when I open that linked file with Inkscape, it already is broken into 78 paths - it cannot be broken down further. Have you already opened that file with Inkscape, Brenda?

No, I did not try to import a metafile - didn't know I could! I will give it a shot. Thanks for letting me know.

Success! Using a metafile does exactly what I need. Thank you so much for all your help Hachmann & TylerDurden.
