Cannot Get Rotation Arrows

Asked by David Tselnik

I draw several lines using the Bezier tool, put some dots - to create a figure which I needed. Then I wanted to rotate that entire figure. I used the select tool, draw a box around my figure and got the straight arrows. Then I clicked on my figure but, instead of getting rotation arrows, the straight arrows simply disappeared. So I cannot get rotation arrows, and I cannot rotate my figure. How do I get the rotation arrows in such situation?

Check if the object is locked or grouped or if another object is above it. Avoid clicking on any other object accidentally.

You can select objects in a group by holding Ctrl and clicking.

Or you can switch from scale mode to rotation mode by keyboard shortcut, to avoid having to click altogether.

Dear Person Hachmann,
I would like to thank you for your responses. However, it is difficult for me - who is absolutely new to the Inkscape - to understand what exactly I should do to be able to overcome my particular difficulty. For example, in your  response (please see below) you write, "Check if the object is locked or grouped ... ." I have no idea how to check if the object is locked or grouped. Besides, does the object need to be locked or grouped - in order for me to get rotation arrows? Or it needs to be not locked and not grouped? Your answers probably would be sufficient for somebody who is not an absolute  beginner in Inkscape. If you want to help me, please give detailed answers. I would be very thankful for that. David Tselnik.

I understand, David.

- to see if an object is grouped:
  - select it with the selection tool
  - look into the status bar at the bottom of the Inkscape window and read what it says there. Does it say 'group of...'? Then it's grouped.

- you can select an object, or the group it's in. You can rotate both, but you need to have the object or the group selected, depending on what you want to rotate.

Please, aside from this, also dedicate some time to read up about Inkscape in tutorials.

I made a nice list for beginners here:

It might also be that you're encountering some very strange kind of bug, but until we have ruled out the most obvious causes, I'm not going to assume a bug for this.
