how to get all students inkscape to look the same?

Asked by Melissa Milhorn on 2018-10-01

I am teaching inkscape classes on how to use the program to make svgs to make tshirts and similiar for cutting machines. My problem is, some of my students' screens look different and I can't get all the toolbars in the same place. All have the same version. This has to be something simple that I am overlooking. What causes the toolbars to be on the top or side? The odd thing is that I can't find where there are any settings set differently. Drag and dropping doesn't work either.

A handy trick is to keep a standardized preferences file (preferences.xml) that you can load onto all the students' machines before beginning classes.

This will not only unify the workspace layout, but a wide number tool settings, window settings, document properties, etc.

Inkscape will need to be restarted on all the machines before starting class, but then all machines should look and behave the same to start with.

The drag-and-drop issue would need more info. Please tell us about the operating system, Inkscape version, and which programs you drag-and-drop between.

The drag and drop issue I have finally figured out!! You can drag it back when the cursor changes to an x.

8thrule-- can you please get a little more specific on preferences.xml thank you!!
