Is there a way to take a selection and create a new layer with it?

I would like to be able to select a series of shapes and cut them from the current layer in order to place them in a new layer, ie create a new layer from a selection.

You can do this the other way around, currently:

- Create a new layer
- Select objects
- Right-click
- Click on 'Move to layer'
- Select new layer

If you want a shortcut for this, please open a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape and describe how it would work in as much detail as you can.
