If the object moves off the screen how do I get it back quickly

If the object has merely moved, I'd use undo. Or, use the "Zoom to fit drawing in window" button in the commands bar... this will show all visible objects on the canvas.

If it's still selected, you can zoom to it by pressing 3, or you can move it back to the page center (if that's what you want) by using the Align and Distribute dialog (object > align and distribute) to center horizontally and vertically in relation to the page.
