Inkscape Error on Startup

Hi,
Every time i startup Inkscape i get an error message saying

"preferences.xml is not a valid XML document.
Inkscape will run with default settings, and new settings will not be saved."

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Delete or rename preferences.xml in your Inkscape user configuration directory. This will get rid of all your previously set preferences, though, so make sure that you review the preferences after this, to set your favourite settings again.

The file is located at the path indicated at Edit > Preferences > System > User config.

Inkscape will create a new one when there isn't a preferences.xml.

Deleting the Prefs file, does stop the pop-up appearing and you can then re apply your preferences.
The trouble is after one or two more opening and closing of the software it goes back to saying it is an invalid file.
i have used ink scape for a number of years, on both Win7 and now win10 without this fault.
Now it seems it wont go away, even after reinstalling ink scape to the current download.
it really is getting rather annoying, to have to reset all my preferences every couple of days!

Can you help with this problem?
