Bezier lines are thick when cropping object from background

i'm trying to crop an image from it's background and using the bezier tool, which I have done before, now it is showing as a thick line and only cropping what is in that thickness not what i have highlighted to be removed. how do i fix this?

This is just a guess, but the one with the highest probability:

Make sure to set 'Shape' to 'None' when using the Bézier tool.

Or, for an existing path, do Path > Remove path effects.
