placing one svg on top of other without bleed through

Asked by Wendy Scott

I created an svg of a dog and I want to place it on top of a box, as if it is resting on it. I can't figure out how to get the dog to be opaque and cover the box. Currently the parts that intersect show some of the box through, no matter the transparency level. If I try to adjust the dog, it loses all the subtlety of the drawing. I'm very new to this all.

Please upload an example file to a sharing service like dropbox, and provide link here, so we can examine it and better help.

Generally, opacity/transparency can be controlled at many levels: colors, objects, layers, etc.
