Bmp outputs

Asked by Kim

Hi
When I've finished my design in Inkscape, I select all and go to edit/ make a bitmap copy but the output is png.
I'm using my design for laser engraving software which requires an upload of bmp.
If I use paint or other online tools to convert the png to bmp, I lose the quality of the design.
Can you advise of other ways to output from Inkscape as bmp please?
Thank you!
Kim

The term 'bitmap' here refers to any picture that consists of colored dots, not the specific file format. A jpg is a bitmap image, a png is a bitmap image, a gif is a bitmap image and a Windows bmp is also a bitmap image.

Inkscape does not export to bmp.

To convert an exported PNG image (exported via Edit > Export PNG image) to bmp, open it in a bitmap editor (e.g. Gimp, or some other raster graphics software), then export to bmp.

The bmp file format itself is not lossy, and should be able to hold the data from the PNG just fine - so probably the convertors you used have default settings that lose data.

Can you help with this problem?
