trace bitmap dialog OK button does nothing

I've never traced a bitmap before on inkscape, so I may be doing something wrong. However, when I click OK on the trace bitmap nothing at all happens. It is a png file, black and white, I've selected it, left all the settings as is in the dialogue box. Can't think of anything else I'm doing wrong.

Don't beat yourself up too badly...

Sometimes the trace is so fast, it seems like nothing happened. Line-art can trace in an instant.

Also, the status bar does not always indicate a path is selected after the trace is done, and it still says "Select an image to trace" or something similar.
