Image not loading or updating in trace bitmap window

I am having problems with the program. when right clicking the image, trace bitmap is not on the drop down menu as it was on my previous computer also once i have clicked path and trace bitmap on the top menu it is not loading the actual image in the bitmap screen or updating, once i click okay and close the trace screen I can then lift the trace from the original image but as I can not preview the image as i'm tracing I have no idea of the quality until i have lifted the trace from the original. I hope this makes sense.

Can you please:

- copy your complete Inkscape version name here (Help -> About, top right corner)
- tell us which operating system and version number you are using
- tell us how you installed Inkscape (which file, which web page, which repository, or whatever applies to your situation)

Oh, and also:

- is the image embedded or linked?
- are you sure you have the picture selected (common issue, as it gets deselected easily)?
