How do I remove the white background from SVG images, using Inkscape 0.92.2?

I tried this fix I found in the FAQ: Click on the object. Choose Path > Trace bitmap > Mode > checked Remove background box. Didn't work. FYI: I'm a newbie.

Please describe in greater detail:
Are you trying to remove the background from an imported bitmap?
Are you opening an existing svg that has vector objects, bitmap objects or both?

Can you post a link to an example file for us to examine?
