how do I convert a straight cut line to a dotted line in an existing svg?

Asked by pat roberts

I am trying to 'fix' some svgs that have solid cut lines and make them 'dotted' cut lines in order to fold them when I get the item cut out. I use a Brothers Scan N Cut cutting machine and don't like to convert all the svgs to fcm files because that doesn't fix the problem. but many of the svgs come with colored solid lines for fold lines and my machine reads them as cut lines. How do I verify I have the dotted line in the same place as the original colored solid line ? any help is greatly appreciated.
thank you

You could do the following to convert a normal path into one with gaps:

- select path or paths
- open Fill + Stroke dialog, select third tab
- select a dash pattern from the drop down
- you can modify the line width, if the size of the dash pattern doesn't suit you. You can change it back later.

The next step makes your line become difficult to edit - so if you think you might ever need to change its shape, make a copy of the document now.

Now, with the paths still selected, go to Extensions > Modify Path > Convert to Dashes
Done!
