Text stroke style

Asked by Guido Kossmann

Hi there, I´m new to Inkscape. I´d like to change the stroke style of a text. I´d like a brush framing the letters, but I failed to implement brush styles from the library in this context. I would be very pleased if somebody could help me in this concern.
Cheers, guidO

Can you explain what you mean by 'brush framing' or 'brush styles from the library'? Perhaps you can you link to a picture that is similar to what you want to achieve? (and explain what library you mean?)

Tutorials about Inkscape usage are available via Help > Tutorials > 'Basic' and 'Advanced', and manuals can be found at
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
http://write.flossmanuals.net/start-with-inkscape/_draft/

Not sure if they'll be helpful for your specific question, though.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I´d like the stroke style of a text change to a brush pattern. In order to have the fill framed by this brush. I tried to use patterns from the library, but I failed. I´ll try the Manuals. Cheers, guidO

So, I had a brief look, but in these manuals I couldn´t find a solution applied to my problem...

I'm still wondering what kind of 'brush pattern library' you might mean. Inkscape does not have a brush pattern library.

There are settings for the calligraphy tool, and brushes can be imitated using a Live Path Effect called 'pattern along path'.

Can you make a screenshot of what you mean by 'brush library'?

The usage of the 'pattern along path' path effect is described in a couple of tutorials (they all focus on a specific part of it, so you better read them all):

http://write.flossmanuals.net/inkscape/pattern-along-path/
http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=29
https://tucsonlabs.com/2008/10/24/brushes-in-inkscape/
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-LivePathEffects-PatternAlongPath.html

And then there's also the 'Sketch' path effect, which may or may not be useful.

(you'd need to duplicate the text for using this, and it will most probably not work out as you expect it to)

Well, I used Expression Design to create logos for my enterprise. Those logos were fine for a print on my printer.

As I wanted to print stickers I was told to use a vector based programme. Since the frame of the text is essential for the logo´s meaning, I am quite keen on beeing able to do so with a vector based programme. Using Expression Design it was merely a task of half a minute, thus I wonder if this is really a thing of impossible when using Inkscape. If you have suggestions of using another programme, please let me know. Cheers, guidO

It's not impossible to do something similar with Inkscape, but it's advanced functionality.
Please read up on the links I gave to learn more.

And if you could somehow clarify about the brush library, or even make a screenshot of your logo and share that via some online image hoster (attachments do not work here), then we could move on to the details of 'how'.

Hello Maren,
thanks for your patience. Yes, you´re right. I confused the library task with another programme I used. Since I am not a trained user of graphic software and suffer a severe lack of time, I beg for pardon. Nor am I a user of a certain image hoster. if you could suggest one, I´d be glad. It would definitely easier to see what my problem is really about.

For screenshots, imgur.com or framapic.org are fine, for svg files you could use imgh.us or framadrop.org (those are just some commonly used examples/examples that align with Inkscape's philosophy, there are many more free image or file hosting websites).

Thanks for the reply. I Used Framapic to host an example for my need: https://framapic.org/m0SqFVPIeCwM/zyu8J4Cq9kLu?dl. It would be great, if it was possible to create something similar with Inkscape...

It's not impossible, but it's difficult to do for a beginner, and even more difficult to explain.

Please refer to the links I've given above, especially this one:

Sorry, you will need to do some reading yourself.
