Unable to select objects

Asked by Joe Duncan-Duggal

Hi, im working on a project in inkscape with multiple layers which i have unlocked and locked repeatedly. I now find that certain objects in some layers i cannot select, even when the layer is unlocked. I have confirmed the object is in the layer i have unlocked by toggling layer visibility, and am at a loss as to what the issue could be.
It may be fairly simple as i am quite new to inkscape.
Any help appreciated!

Hi Joe,

can you share a file? Please upload to some online file hosting service (or your own server) and share a link here.
Please also indicate the objects that have the issue, so we can help faster.

Mmh. Those layers really *are* locked. Or rather, all layers in your image are locked, see

Sometimes, it may happen that the layers dialog doesn't properly update, especially if you lock/unlock layers quickly, due to a bug, which is probably the cause of the issue you see.

To fix, you can either close and restart Inkscape, or rely on the lock icon display in the status bar, which is correct always (to my knowledge). I don't remember if closing/reopening the dialog helped, I think it didn't, but not sure. You might want to try it out.

Additionally, you may want to update your Inkscape version, currently we're at 0.92.2 - your file suggests you're using 0.91.

Good luck with your project!

Ah, sorry. I see. Also do 'Object -> Unlock all' to unlock the objects that are locked separately.

And I think I may have found the cause. You seem to have turned some layers that must have been locked at the time into normal groups, not sure how. Perhaps you imported them from another drawing?

(Import turns layers into groups, and places those groups into the current layer)

ah yes i did import some of the figures from other drawings, how do i access these groups then, in the 'object > unlock all' mentioned above?

object > unlock all, did not help unfortunately

It does. Unlock the layers first.

(explanation: Inkscape only changes the status of anything that is in an unlocked layer)
