Cannot print directly from Inkscape

Asked by Phil Gibbs

Going back a few years, I've read much about other people's issues with printing directly from Inkscape - and have tried to resolve my recent problem ...with no success.

Printing stops immediatley arfter rendering. I can print nothing directly from Inkscape. Printer (and scanner) work great in all other apps (GIMP, Office, Shotwell etc..)
Print status attributes indicate a failed filter, although no filters are applied to any of my .svg files.
My workaround is to open any saved .svg file into LibreOffice and print from there.
I'm using :
Ubuntu 16.04 running on a separate drive partition on a MacBook Pro
Canon TS9020 Wifi printer with latest drivers 5.40 for Ubuntu
Inkscape 0.91
CUPS ver 2.1.3

Everything has been updated / upgraded.
It's not dire, but could anyone kindly suggest a fix?

Does pdf export work? Does print to file work?

Can you run Inkscape from the command line, and paste any error messages that might pop up?
Also whatever message it is with the failed filter (and where exactly that message can be found)?

Can you then also try with latest Inkscape (0.92.2) from the ppa? https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/ubuntu/stable (if you have a snap version of Inkscape installed, please remove it before installing the version from the ppa - sudo snap remove inkscape - you can find out by typing 'which inkscape'.)

(What I usually do is export to png and print from Gimp, because it has this great print dialog that allows me to exactly place any printouts on the paper - but not because printing doesn't work from Inkscape for me on Linux Mint 18.2)

Seasons Greetings and many thanks for your speedy reply..

Yes - Inkscape 0.91 would run error-free from the command line. It was installed from the ppa (did not use Snap)
and I could print to file in any format, and export to a pdf.
The reference to the failed filter was found in the print queue dialogue box. If I selected any print job that failed to print and right-clicked, then selected 'Attributes', it would list the many attributes for that job....ie....

Name Value
job-impressions-completed 0
job-k-octets 29
job-preserved True
job-printer-state-message Filter failed
job-printer-state-reasons ['none']
job-printer-uri ipp://localhost/printers/Canon-TS9000-series
job-priority 50
job-state 6
job-state-reasons job-completed-with-errors
.etc............................

I decided to uninstall ver 0.91 and give ver 0.92.2 a try.
This gave me another problem in that the new Inkscape fails to find my installed printer. The only option under 'print' is 'print to file.
This option works well and i can print to file in any format.
Running Inkscape from the terminal gave me these 4 lines..

Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "overlay-scrollbar"
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "gail"
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "atk-bridge"
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

Trying to load the libgail-common and libatk-adaptor libraries gives me an 'already installed' message.
So I'm back to where I started - unable to print from Inkscape. But I like your idea of using Gimp to print svg files with its many more printing options..

Don't know what happened to my post, but it now indicates my printing problem from within Inkscape is SOLVED.... which it definitely isn't!

I'm by no means a printer expert, so I've done a google search, and also looked in the bug reports.

Perhaps looking into /var/log/cups/error_log will give you additional hints.

These are some links that may or may not be related:

If you can't find it out with these hints, I'd suggest getting help from either the CUPS people, or perhaps to try in Inkscape's IRC channels, if there is someone who can help with this.
