If you don't care about image quality a lot, you can export the picture at a good resolution (e.g. 600 dpi) and use a raster graphics editor (e.g. Gimp or Photoshop) to cut things out. For many, this will be the easier option, because they understand how to deal with raster graphics - rather than learning how to ungroup and delete items they don't need, or how to use clip paths.

Just in case:

Clipping:
http://goinkscape.com/how-to-crop-an-image-in-inkscape/ (will give you a large file, and might not be interpreted correctly in Word)

Learn how to use Inkscape:
http://write.flossmanuals.net/start-with-inkscape/_draft/why-use-inkscape/ (beginner manual)
http://vektorrascheln.de/posts/2015/Dec/inkscape-fuer-einsteiger-teil-ii-praxis-en.html (shorter intro tutorial - includes info about grouping/ungrouping and deleting objects)

Can you help with this problem?
