Text tool missing from menu!!?

Having an odd issue not previously seen. The text tool icon is missing entirely from the left hand menu. So there is no way to add any text at all at the moment. Has anyone encountered this or have suggestions on how to proceed? Naturally Im on a deadline so this is not ideal! Thanks

Could it be hidden currently needing to use the double arrow at the bottom of the left hand menu?

hit the double arrow and the word text is there, select it and nothing happens

uh, scratch that. I do have the text tool now after all. It still is no longer visible but at least i can get it now.
