I am beginner. select rectangle tool, drag a dotted box, nothing appears inside, click away and its all gone. same with all shapes

Asked by Richard Carlin on 2017-11-04

I am a beginner trying to learn. It's probably a setting but when I choose a shape tool square or circle, doesn't matter which, and drag a dotted box on the screen nothing appears inside. If I then click the selection tool the handles appear but still nothing inside.
If I click away completely then the object goes as if it was never there.

Completely stuck.

If I close and re-open inkscape and select the basic tutorial I still get the same problem.

What's happening please?

Hi, there are probably objects there with no fill or stroke, or no opacity to the fill/stroke.

I'd open the fill/stroke panel and try to make an object, and while the shape is still selected, check the fill/stroke panel for color and opacity.

Chime back and let us know...

Hi Tyler,

Thanks very much for your answer. You are correct! I had 0% opacity selected. Don't know how or why. By doing a big drag on the screen I noticed that the objects were actually on screen. This pointed me to the answer.

Many thanks

Rich
