I hesitate to recommend the bucket tool to a beginner, but for this specific case it might be exactly what gets you going:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Bucket.html

Only be sure to not use it in drawings that you create yourself. Use fill and stroke instead.

You can find an introductory tutorial for Inkscape under Help -> Tutorials: Basic.
It explains about Fill and Stroke.

The detailed manual talks about fill and stroke here:
http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Attributes.html

An introductory manual is available at write.flossmanuals.net/start-with-inkscape/_draft/why-use-inkscape/ - you will be interested in the part about colors most.

Another interactive tutorial can be found at http://vektorrascheln.de/posts/2015/Dec/inkscape-fuer-einsteiger-teil-i-grundlagen-en.html and http://vektorrascheln.de/posts/2015/Dec/inkscape-fuer-einsteiger-teil-ii-praxis-en.html respectively (theory / practice)

If you need further help, you can find more help on these web pages:

Can you help with this problem?
