Can you post an example file? Which step is the one that causes issues?

(btw. that tutorial suggests using the bucket tool for filling the triangles, while all you'd need to do would be to set a fill color... and remove the stroke or change it, perhaps). Inkscape 0.92 even allows you to put the stroke above the fill, if you prefer that.
