All layers melts into layer when opening a AI file in Inkscape

Asked by Jon on 2017-09-17

Hi!

I have several designs created in Adobe Illustrator by a friend.

I don't have a license for Illustrator. So want to work with the designs in Inkscape, but in Inkscape all the layers melts into one layer.

I need all the layers from Illustrator to work in Inkscape. Do anyone know how to fix this?

Can you check if the layers have perhaps been converted to groups?
Then it would be possible to fix this.

(SVG doesn't have a concept of layers, btw. - Inkscape only adds

inkscape:groupmode: layer

to the group's properties. Then they act as a layer inside Inkscape.)

You can add this to any group you like in Inkscape, too:

1. Open XML editor.
2. Select a group that you want to convert to a layer.
3. In the top text entry field, type:

inkscape:groupmode

4. and in the bottom text entry field, type:

layer

5. Then click on set.

Should appear now in the layers dialog.

The objects panel can also convert groups to layers, by clicking on the layer/group icons.

Right, forgot about that new option! Find it in 'Object' -> 'Objects...'.

Can you help with this problem?
