How do I set a drawing unit based on the size of an object in an imported PNG?

I've imported a PNG into my drawing.

Say the length of a KNOWN object in that PNG is say 7.62 metres.

How do I get Inkscape to set up a scale in metres based on that object inside the PNG?

I want to be able then to measure the size of other objects in that picture.
