How do I cut an object down so that its size matches the size of the page?

Asked by dawnmichelle

I want to use something as a background and I want it to take up the whole page I'm creating. I've tried the rectangle and set but I can't get it to work. First, I can't see the bounds of the original page. I've resized my background a bit to match the length but the thing is too wide and I want it to match the page dimensions. Please help. Thank you!

first go to File menu> Document properties (Shift+Ctrl+D) and check the box that says "Border on top of drawing", like this you'll be able to see at any time the bounds of the original page.

if you want a rectangle to match the size of your page, create a rectangle, in the tool control bar give it the size of your document, then open the align and distribute panel (Shift+Ctrl+A) set the "relative to" pop up to "Page" and centre your rectangle horizontally and vertically so it will match exactly your document size.

if what you want as a background is an image, do the rectangle as explained above and place your image under it (place first your image acording to the page bounds and then send it to the back (Object menu>Lower to bottom)). Then select both your rectangle and image and go to the Object menu > Clip > Set, this will crop your image to the size of your rectangle. If you are not satisfied with the result you ca undo the clipping at any time by selecting your image Object menu> Clip > Release, arrange your placement again and clip again.

1- move the image out of the page
2- create a rectangle of the size of the page
3- move the rectangle over the part of the image you want to preserve
4- Select the image and the rectangle (shift+click or click+drag around both objects)
5- go to object, clip, make.
6- Open the Align Dialog (CTRL+SHIFT+A) and align the clipped image to the page.

You're done. :-)

p.s.: In the document preferences there is an option to show the bounds of the page over the drawing. In that case you won't need the first step (moving the image out of the page to see the page bounds).
