Hi Mark,

each vector object in Inkscape can have a "fill" (color in between its contours) and a "stroke" (color applied to its contours).

A "path" is one kind of vector object Inkscape supports (i.e. a free form shape).

An ellipse is... an ellipse. And can have fill and / or stroke.

So, what you want is to swap fill and stroke of an ellipse.
There is a shortcut for that in the bottom left corner.
