Why does inkscape open at above 700% to eat up all the memory?

Asked by Steven King

When opening an existing file the size of the magnification is in excess of 700% and is extremely slow to not responding. It also crashes a lot. I didn't have this problem when I first started using the program years ago. This has been happening in the last year or so. What can I do to stop this and make it run without bogging down and crashing?

Hi Steven,

the last zoom level is saved in the file, so if you close it when at 700%, it will load at that level (also when it crashes before you save).
You can open the SVG file with a text editor, and search for the line starting wit
inkscape:zoom

For 100 percent, set the number in the quotes to 1. Save. Open again with Inkscape.

As for speed:
- if you're using filters in the drawing, use outline mode or no filters view mode.
- clean up the document using the functionality in the File menu.
- make sure you're not using lots of unnecessary nodes, filters, path effects,...
- tweak the settings for CPU core usage and precision

As for the reason for the crashes, I can't even guess without more info:

1. Does it only crash with this file, or with other, simple documents also?
2. Does it crash when you do something specific?
3. What is your operating system?
4. What is your Inkscape version?
5. Which Inkscape file have you installed? (exe, msi, zip, ppa, repository, self-compiled, flatpak, dmg, macport, homebrew, snap,...)
6. 32 or 64bit?
7. Can you share a link to the file?

Kind Regards,
 Maren

The "(also when it crashes before you save)" means it will keep opening with the same zoom level, if you weren't able to save at another one before a crash.
