only some items are apppearinng in pdf

Asked by kevin flett on 2017-07-08

I draw an arched window using three lines and arc and export as a pdf for laser cutting ( all lines set to .01mm as required by cutter) however only the three straight lines appear and subsequently cut ....
I,ve just tested a few other shapes and bezier curves and the boxes seem to be the only ones saving to the pdf ... tried grouping as suggested in FAQ but to no effect ... thanks in advance

Hi Kevin,

please see https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1174909 for an explanation.

For a solution, it might help if you convert your circle into a path (Path -> Object to path), then it should still be above the threshold that is currently imposed by the cairo library.

Let me know if that works for you!

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Sadly that hasn't fixed it ...real bugbear as that line thickness is set on the laser cutters as the lines to cut ..not my machines :( library's so can,t alter at that end ..hmmm.  Thanks

Does your laser cutter understand any different file formats, perhaps, Kevin?

IE it,s a zing one and that is how the library media hub has it set up ..and it,s sorta ...'bring it in as a pdf with the lines set to that thickness...no fine tuning or tech help .. If that makes sense...  Cheers

Mmh, that's unfortunate :-/

One other option: Can you upload an example file, and I'll try on my system if I get the same results? It might be that we are using different versions of the cairo library, or that I'll be able to find a different approach.

Please use a file hoster for your example file, email attachments will not work.

(and if possible, set your email program to send plain text emails, it's really difficult to read your answers among all the html tags, see https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/647107 for how it looks for me)

kevin flett (leaflett) said : #6

hi thanks for being so patient
I hope i,ve set the email so it is readable .
.so essentially all those lines need to be set to .01mm for the zing laser cutter to recognise them as cut lines rather than rasters .
and in pdf format for the libary to accept..but whe i view pdf the arched bits are not there

many thanks hope i,ve shared the file correctly ...

Hi Kevin,

the plain text worked :)

But for an example svg file, please use a file hoster and post the link, e.g. visit imgh.us or framadrop.org or google drive or dropbox, and upload the file (one with a design you don't care about), then add a link to that file in your next message.

Kind Regards,

Hi Kevin,

yes, this time it worked :)

Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce your problem.

This is what I did:
- File -> Save a copy... -> select pdf in the file format chooser -> type a name that ends with .pdf -> Click save. As the lines are all 1mm thick, I did not expect this to fail, and it didn't fail.
- In a next trial, I ungrouped everything (hit Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+U repeatedly, until the status line says there are no groups in the selection), then set the stroke width for all selected objects to 0.1 mm. Then repeat the saving a copy as pdf. The resulting pdf also showed all lines.

I tried both these on Windows 10, with Inkscape 0.92.1 64bit version, and on a current Linux Mint 18.2.

This is the resulting file (from Linux), which contains all lines, the curved and the straight ones:
https://framadrive.org/s/r6pLBhl1IqM1BnQ

Does your exported pdf look different? (Look at it with Acrobat reader or whichever pdf reader you are using)

If it looks the same, then perhaps it's just the laser cutter that does not have support for curved lines? We can find an easy fix for that, by approximating the arcs by polygons. I'll explain how to do that if this is the case.

Kind Regards,
 Maren

kevin flett (leaflett) said : #15

Hi Maren
really appreciate you battling throu this ...sadly it's when the lines are set to 0.01mm not 0.1mm that the trouble occurs and 0.01 is the size that the zing laser  recognises as line to cut ... may have to rethink this one but i have loads of curves and arched windows to cut ..cheers kev

Ah, thanks! Iremembered it wrongly, sorry.
But the solution (or rather, workaround for the linked cairo issue, in this case) is easy, fortunately:

- Select all curved shapes.
- Switch to node tool.
- Hit Ctrl+A to select all nodes in all arcs.
- Now insert more nodes (click on the first icon in the node tool's tool bar, the one with the plus sign)
- Repeat until you think there are enough nodes to still make it look curved, even if all nodes are connected by straight lines
- Now click on the icon that says 'Make selected segments lines'
- Export to pdf.
- Check that it's round enough for your purpose.
- Laser cut :)

Kind Regards,
 Maren

I shall try that tomorrow with a clearer head .... as it's bedtime here and it's exhausted me ..thanks again ..been tracing contour maps in draftsight  to .dxf then having to change them to .svgs the to pdfs and them check which lines are missing  ...computers eh :)

If you ever need a centerline tracer for Inkscape, to shorten the toolchain a bit (it sounds like it to me), you can try this one:

https://github.com/fablabnbg/inkscape-centerline-trace (installation and running it on Windows can be tricky, on Linux it works great)

To find objects with curved segments faster, you can try the 'Find and Replace' dialog, with the following settings:

Find: "c " (both may be needed, in two separate runs, enter without quotes)
Search in: Properties
Scope: All
Options: General: Nothing checked.
                Properties: Only 'Attribute value' checked.
                Object types: Only 'Paths' checked.

Hachmann (marenhachmann) said : #19

sorry, forgot to delete the part 'both may be needed in two separate runs' after finding out about the case sensitive option. Only needs to be run once. Ignore it :) (but remove the quotes)
