Trouble with shadow

I'm using Inkscape ver .92.1
opened help to the manual:
Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program
Fifth Edition
Tavmjong Bah
Quick start
A Can of Soup—A Three-Dimensional Drawing with Gradients
I do fine until I get to step 4: Adding a shadow.
Am attaching a screenshot of what happens when (I think) I'm following instructions.

Thanks you for the clarification. I was hing up in the words "straight" sides. And thank you for showing only the object under consideration so as not to confuse things!
