Please tell me how to do a backtrace so I can report a bug

Asked by Lisa Barr

Inkscape crashed and I want to attach a backtrace file to my post, but can't figure out how to do a backtrace. Can someone help me?

Win 2K SP4
Inkscape v 0.46

I can repeat the crash.

as a start you could simply describe your bug in the bugs section, specifying the steps to do to cause the crash.

try launching inkscape from the comand line (windows key+R and type cmd), navigate to inkscapes folder (cd C://program files/inkscape... or whatever the path is on your computer), once your in the folder type inkscape(.exe) to launch it. (im on linux but i think this should do the trick on windows..)

.. forgot to say..when launching from the command line, check the output on it when the crash happens. Then copy paste the error in your bug submission.

I really don't understand your instructions.

I can launch inkscape from a command line, no problem. But "check the output on it when the crash happens" means nothing to me.

How do I make this happen?

that just means that when inkscape crashes, eventually something gets written in the command line, if it does.. tell us what it says.

OK, I got it started from the command line. When it crashes (and it did 4 times on Friday) I'll let you know what it says in the command window.

Thanks for explaining it to this Non-Geek!

(I had to get someone else in my office to remind me how to do the DOS commands to get it up and running, but I did get it finally)

I did as you said, but when it crashed, nothing appeared in the command line. So instead I copied the Dr. Watson file. Will that work?
