Colour picking from an imported .jpg

Asked by bosshogg

I'm having problems understanding the explanation given to the above heading. Having imported a .jpg image onto the Inkscape working page, and having checked it has an Alfa channel, I have attempted to select a colour and replace it, but so far nothing happens, can someone please advise an novice like me...bosshogg

Hi bosshogg,

Inkscape is a vector graphics program, it is not meant for editing raster graphics.

That said, to modify colors in an imported bitmap graphic, you can use the extensions that you find under Extensions -> Raster (they will modify the data of the image) or you can use the filters that you can find at Filters -> Color (they will overlay a filter).

However, none of these will be able to replace a single color (unless you want to make it transparent, I think).

You can also vectorize the drawing, then use the Extension found in Extensions -> Color -> Replace Color, or you can just use an appropriate software, like Gimp (https://gimp.org).

Kind Regards,
 Maren

Maren thank you again. I've taken to reviewing tutorials on YouTube in the
hope of gaining a better understanding of Inkscape I've got to say it's
both brilliant and complex and for that reason worthwhile learning. As for
your advise, I'll try that out tonight if not to tiered from running my
Men's Shed.
