very slow if I open a big svg file because it uses too much memory

Asked by Cos

Hi! I'm trying to edit a 20Mb SVG file but it takes ages to load in Inkscape and when it's finally loaded every single action is even slower.
I had a look at the resource used and found out that almost all my RAM has been used by Inkscape, almost 400MB out of 512MB in total. I know I should ideally have more memory installed in order to run it more smoothly but I was wondering whether I could perhaps reduce the memory usage to a minimum by for example lowering the quality of the image, using command line instead of GUI, or by playing with any other settings...

Any suggestions is welcomed.
Thanks for you support!

you could work in outline mode
or
you could use a development version of Inkscape, so you will have the options to reduce quality of the filters and blurs in the inkscape preferences and/or toggle the display from "normall to "no filters" in the view menu.
you can find builds here:

for windows:
http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?M=D

for ubuntu:
https://launchpad.net/~inkscape-nightly/+archive

for mac:
http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?M=D

or compile it yourself:
