how do I eliminate a background

I paid for 2 pix from shutterstock.....the one has a white background that I do not know how or understand how from the faqs. I need to put it over another whitish pix and the stupid white square stands out like a sore thumb...any advice in an idiots language please
Thanks, I am trying to place a goose pix over a white t shirt but t shirt is a different shade of white. hope this makes sense.

You could try to auto-trace (I did see your next question). Or, you could trace by hand to make a clip object.

Please post the filenames of the stock images (eg. goose.png, goose.jpg) the file extension will indicate if they are bitmaps.

If you are not using Inkscape to add vector objects, you might consider using GIMP to edit /compose bitmap images.
