importing

Asked by Jenny

I'm trying to import a file from my docs into Inscape so I can work on it but can't seem to do it. Copying and pasting doesn't work. I can't scan into Inkscape. How do I get a file with pictures on it into Inscape. What programme will it accept as a 'transporter' from the scanner to Inscape?

I have scanned in a page, sent it to word - can't import from there. Then tried PAINT - still no good. Help!
aLSO CAN'T WORK OUT HOW TO ACCESS CLIPART FROM iNKSCAPE. I'm not a computer buff but am reasonably intelligent - most times! Jenny

in what format are your pictures?
the easiest way is to open an Inkscape document, and drag and drop the pictures (i.e. .jpg, .gif, .png, .tiff ...) on it. Usually your scanner will already save the files in one of those formats, so drag and drop the file on Inkscapes window, you can also go to the File menu> Import and navigate to the file you want to open.

If by clip art you mean the open clip art library, go to the File menu > Import From Open Clip Art Library, in the window that opens type a keyword of the image your looking for, press "search", and a list of images will appear, select them to see a preview and press "Open" when you find the one you like.

If you're using Inkscape 0.46 on Windows it's possible that you can't import jpg files (there's a bug that has already been fixed for the next version). There are some issues in copying and pasting bitmaps too.
If you want to make sure that your files import correctly in inkscape, use the PNG format.

If you want a free and powerful image manipulation program, you can download GIMP (www.gimp.org).
It's similar to Photoshop, but free (no cost and no restrictions to your freedom)
GIMP offers a bridge to your scanning software via twain acquire and lets you manipulate the image and save it in several different formats.
Use GIMP for scanning your images, save them as PNG files, and they will be ready to be imported in Inkscape.
