Can I open .dxf files in Inkscape?

Asked by skippiebg

Would like to work with originals in AutoCAD format (specifically .dfx extensions) but find that Inkscape fails to open them ("Failed to load the requested file ..."). Is there a solution, or should I look at other software?

I think .dxf import feature for Inkscape is still in development.
As a workaround for now, open your .dxf file in OpenOffice Draw, and save it as an svg, then you'll be able to open the svg in Inkscape.

Sadly, this does not work. Draw does not display .svg in the dialog box. This means that the .dxf file has to be modified to a bitmap and then to .svg, which negates all the advantages of vector graphics at a stroke...

In openoffice draw you are probably doing "save as.." instead go to File menu>Export, there you will see the svg option

Thank you! Would have taken me ages to work that one out.

Thank you for your input. I am now able to work around the issue thanks to Rico's input above.
