convert eps files for use in Inkscape .46?

Asked by cindym

I have worked in Adobe Illustrator for years and have lots of files in eps format. I would like to use them in Inkscape. Is there some way to convert them so I can do this? I have Inkscape .46.

OK, I have read the forum area dealing with converting eps files for use in Inkscape. I have downloaded and installed pstoedit, but no change in Inkscape.

I have also downloaded ghostscript, but have no idea what to do with it.

Please, I am a user, not a programmer in any sense of the word. I would just like to be able to use my eps files. I was let go from my job (where I used Illustrator) and of course cannot afford to purchase it for home use. Before that I was gradually converting some of my eps files to svg, but the axe fell before I could finish.

If there is anything I can do, could someone please list the steps that I need to take now.

there have been improvements in the .eps support since the release of Inkscape 0.46. It might be worth your while to install a more recent development version, which will depend on which OS you are running. In the development version it is done as a normal File | Import and it does indeed use Ghostscript. If this procedure does not work for you, then probably the best thing to do is file a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape

Alvin, thanks for your help. I may try to install a development version; however, that is somewhat outside my comfort zone in terms of computer know-how.

Assuming I use a development version, then what do I need to do with Ghostscript? Right now is is just sitting in a folder on my desktop. Can Inkscape use it from there? I didn't see anything that looked like installation files in the folder. Does it need to be put somewhere in particular?

Again, thanks for your help.

To install devel version download the most recent .7zip file with size >40MB (the smaller ones are broken builds) from http://inkscape.modevia.com/win32/?M=D

Once downloaded use 7zip (google for it) to extract the archive. In the extracted directory you will find inkscape.exe, run it and use, no need to install it anywhere. And if devel version crashes often or cannot do one particular task, you can use the stable instead.

Here is a how to install ghostscript: http://www.athleticaid.com/yaquinapress/postscript/InstallingGSView-Ghostscript.html

Can you help with this problem?
