Personalize the style of an outline

Asked by gbv

Hello,

I'm wondering how to change the outline, its style differently than with the outline style (whish is limited)
I ask this question because I found several brushes for gimp and some of them for inkscape. Now, I do not find where I should install these new brushes et how I could edit one of mine.

Thank you :)

you cannot use gimp brushes into inkscape, they are raster image brushes, you would need vector image brushes for inkscape.
you can import a gimp brush as an image into inkscape and then vectorise (trace) it to turn it into a vector brush.
as far as i know there are 2 ways of applying the brush to the outline in inkscape.

(!)I'm not sure this options are available in 0.46, you might need a devel version of Inkscape, link at the end(!)

-1-
a. select one instance of your brush (that you traced) and copy it (Ctrl+C)
b. select the bezier tool, and in the tool controls bar, on the shape popup, select from clipboard
c. trace your outline, and the brush you copied in 1. will be applied to the line you are tracing.

-2-
a. select one instance of your brush (that you traced) and copy it (Ctrl+C)
b. trace your outline/curve and select it
c. Path menu > path effects > Path effect editor (Shift+Ctrl+7)
d. apply new effect > pattern along path ->Add
e. Pattern souce ->paste path
d. tweak other settings as you like (i.e. Patter copies Single/Repeated etc.)
