Possible to lock a layer and still be able to draw on it?

Asked by badboy00z

I'm doing a line art of a sketch that I made. I scanned the image and started to work on it using a new layer. The problem I have is that it automatically jumps back to the root layer (the original image) when I click outside the image and I always for get to check which layer I'm on. Is there a way to lock layers and still be able to work on it? Also how do I separate layers as different images and save them individually?

Open the layers panel (Shift+Ctrl+L), you'll see a little padlock and eye. Click on the padlock of your original image to lock it.

To save 2 layers as 2 individual images you have 2 solutions depending on the output you want:
1. if you want to save as a PNG, hide and lock the layers you don't want, and File menu> export bitmap (Shift+Ctrl+E).

2. if you want to save as 2 different SVG.. then you'll have to duplicate you'r svg file and erase in each one the layer you don't want.

My original image is set to "(root)" and it does not allow me to lock it. I tried selecting the (root) image and moving it to a new layer but it doesn't work.

did you try to select your image, cut it (Ctrl+X), create a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+L and then click ont the "+" button), and paste in place (Ctrl+Alt+V)?

I tried that with a new doc and it works but didn't work with what I had. Thanks. I'll do that for future projects.
