Symbols not working.

Asked by Mark Fisher

I have a fresh install of Inkscape amd Symbols just appear as a square bounding box with handles. I have checked That Layers, Stroke and Fill all have their opacity set to 100%. I have tried selecting and changing colours, opacity... to no effect.

I have rebooted in case it was a quirk with initial install.

I even created my own symbol and added it to the current document set and then dragged it back onto my document an once again a square (my symbol is not square) bounding box appears.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks, Mark

Hi,
What does the status bar report? (colors, objects, etc)

Are there shape outlines when viewed in outline mode? (Menu: View>Display Mode>Outlines)

I am having the same problem, but with most objects. I cannot simply click on the object either to select it, rather I have to highlight the entire area around it (if I even know where it is) and even then I cannot do anything with it. To add information which TylerDurden asked about, I checked the View menu and the outline DID appear. Some objects do work. Spirals and hand-drawn objects appear and fill correctly. Squares, stars, pentagons, symbols, circles, all do not work. I made a quick video (https://youtu.be/tG45c4dIVjk) which demonstrates the problem I'm having.

I mainly use Inkscape for simple flag design, and since I handdraw nothing the inability to use squares, my most basic tool, has crippled my ability to use the program.

@No: Good work on the video. The status bar indicates zero opacity on the transparent objects, but the fill-stroke panel is just a bit too low on the screen to show the object opacity to confirm. I'd check that.

This could be the problem Mark Fisher is experiencing. Symbols will use the last opacity setting applied, so if a symbol was made transparent, any following instances of the symbol dragged onto the canvas will also be transparent, unless opacity is reset to higher than zero.

@Mark FIsher: I'd check the opacity settings on a transparent symbol object, and/or post a link to an example svg file.

@Mark: Are you on OS X? If so: Did you follow the instructions for the clipboard settings at https://inkscape.org/en/download/mac-os/ ?

@TylerDurden Holy... thanks man. Opacity up fixed it this time. I have literally fixed the problem 3 different ways, 3 different times now. Here's hoping it doesn't appear again.
