Import Coreldraw CDR dateien

Asked by jagehtsnoch

maybe i'm to stupid.. but what do i have to do, to import an CDR (Coreldraw) File into inkscape??
via menu ? (i have already installed/set the following)
# UniConvertor requires Python ,Python Image Library (PIL) and ReportLab package. You need downloading and installing Python 2.5 msi-package (http://python.org) and after that corresponded PIL package (http://pythonware.com) and ReportLab package (http://www.reportlab.org)
# Please check that your Python directory and \Scripts directory are in system path. If not just add they in "My computer->Properties->Advanced->Enviroment Variables" for "Path" system variable.

and all what is described at
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=935

But when i use inkscape => file => import => Type: any type => select an CDR => get an error message in german "Laden der gewünschten Datei ..fehlgeschlagen" means "loading/import of the selected file ... failed"
do you have an idea, how to solve?

best regards jagehtsnoch

Do you have a copy of a CDR for testing?

Well I can't solve it, but here's what I know.

Inkscape uses a shell script cdr2svg.sh to create an SVG file for import in to Inkscape. This script is actually just a wrapper for Uniconv from the sk1 project - see http://sk1project.org/modules.php?name=Products&product=uniconvertor .

It's getting on for 6 months since any work was done on the trunk and it's a year since any SVN activity on CDR. The CDR support is limited to:

CDR - CorelDRAW Graphics files (7-X3,X4 versions)
CDT - CorelDRAW templates files (7-X3,X4 versions)

Using Uniconv-1.1.3 directly I get the following errors:

me@box:~/tmp$ uniconv Schrank.cdr Schrank-uniconv.svg
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<string>", line 1, in <module>
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/uniconvertor/__init__.py", line 72, in <module>
    doc = load.load_drawing(sys.argv[1])
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/uniconvertor/app/io/load.py", line 364, in load_drawing
    return load_drawing_from_file(file, filename)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/uniconvertor/app/io/load.py", line 346, in load_drawing_from_file
    raise SketchLoadError(_("unrecognised file type"))
app.events.skexceptions.SketchLoadError: unrecognised file type

Which I could submit as a bug report, but not knowing the version of CorelDraw used and whether it matches with their supported versions and not having a high expectation of getting support (except perhaps commercially) then it does look worth doing.

Perhaps you could try another route? CDR-to-PDF-to-Inkscape??

Some other options:
1) IrfanView, have used this but not for this format, something seems to stick that it was only for CDR version < 7 but I can't be sure - http://www.freewaremission.com/2008/05/convert-cdr-files-with-irfanview/
2) Konverter - never used it myself, http://www.konvertor.net/indexe.html
3) Online company for manual conversion of CDR, http://cdr.altesign.com/ for $7
4) Last time I looked there was a free trial of CorelDraw

according to what I've been able to find around forums, this error comes from the fact that the .cdr file is from an older format than the ones supported by uniconvertor. As pbhj suggested you might get the free trial of CorelDraw to save your cdr file to a newer .cdr format that should then open in inkscape.

Hi,
i'm still thinking, that i have an "installation-Problem".
I tried a CDR File of Corel X3 from here
http://www.unleash.com/jeffh/blog/2008/11/test-file-for-coreldraw.asp
and i had the same problem...
Does it make sense, if i make a "Dir /S >file.txt" of the inkscape-directory (incl python... is installed under the inkscape dir) to show all the installed files an locations/directorys??

what is supposed to be on the file? I can open it in inkscape with uniconvertor 1.1.2 and 1.1.3.. but there's nothing on it.

did you try to use uniconvertor from the command line?

uniconv yourfile.cdr whatevername.svg

Hi,
to ...but there's nothing on it...
That's not right. There's a kind of "RGB-color-schema" in it.
If you open it with irfan-view you can see it (in a sad quality, but visible).
No. I use the uniconvertor only via
Menue => File => Import => all Files .. because CDR is not in the list ... and i think, here begins my problem.
If uniconvertor would be installed correct, there must be the CDR format in the list, or not?

yes you should see cdr in the list, but i guess it might be more an uniconvertor problem than your installation..as i got it installed as usual, and i've been working already with cdr files, but this one just opens blank.

Can you help with this problem?
