Applying calligraphy effects to a path

Is it possible to apply calligraphy-style effects to a path? Or can the calligraphy tool only be used freehand? I want to apply a more naturalistic look to geometric objects, but retain the precise layout of a path. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

First method:
1. Draw your object and your calligraphy.
2. Select all.
3. Use Effects>Generate from path>Pattern along path...

Alternate:
1. Draw your object and your calligraphy.
2. Select the calligraphy and copy it to the clipboard.
3. Select you object.
4. Use Path>Path Effects>Path Effects.
5. In the dialog, select Pattern along path (in the Apply new effect list) and add it.
6. Paste the calligraphy with the paste icon in the effect dialog.

This could well be what I'm looking for. Now I think I need to do some experiments. Thanks very much for your help.
