wont let me save a graphic I have spent hours working on

Asked by TracyGum

I have a .svg page I have been working on.. I opened this page from a previous session and its where I leave a number of graphics on the page and then I come back to it to add parts and experiment with the graphics I am working on.

I have just spent hours with a graphic getting it how I want to use it ... ready to upload into our website

Inkscape will not let me save it at all

I then tried ... save as: still won't let me save

tried saving as a bitmap and again won't let me save the work

What Have I done wrong and how can I save this as I don't want to have to do it all again...

This is the message I get when I just try saving the work:
File /Users/tracygum/Pictures/BeMeNotU/Logo/humanLogoMaster1.svg could not be saved.

This is the message I get when I try ... saving AS ... the work:
File /Users/tracygum/Pictures/BeMeNotU/Graphics/hBuyNowBottomBanner1.svg could not be saved.

This is the message I get when I try ... exporting AS BitMap ... :

Could not export to filename /Users/tracygum/Pictures/BeMeNotU/logo/g6214.png.

I litterally do not know what to do...
If I close it down I will lose the work wont I?

cheers
Tracy

This is a message I just got trying to save another document ...

No Inkscape extension found to save document (Unnamed document 33). This may have been caused by an unknown filename extension.

I can't save anything in Inkscape at the moment..

Would love to know what I have done wrong?

Cheers

Hi Tracy,

please try these:

- try to save to a different directory
- try to save as Inkscape SVG (i.e. at the bottom of the Save dialog, use that file format)
- make sure the file extension is .svg
- if you're on Windows: make sure that the slashes in the path go into the correct direction: / is on Linux/OS X, \ on Windows.
- check the permissions on the folder you're trying to save to, try by creating a new file there or moving a file there
- save to a folder that is not on a network drive, but only to a local folder
- try to find out which user is running the Inkscape process - maybe you have started Inkscape as another user?

- (improbable, but another thing to try) copy all contents into a new document that you open with Inkscape, try saving that one

- for the future: activate Autosave (Edit -> Preferences -> Input/Output -> Autosave) and save regularly.
There is also an extension that can output the raw svg code for selected objects - but it needs to be installed, and that requires a restart of Inkscape... :-/, so that's not an option for your current situation.

I'll need to go now, please, if you cannot get it solved, visit the Inkscape user chat at https://inkscape.org/en/community/discussion/ .

Kind Regards + good luck,
 Maren

Hi Maren

Thanks for your help.

I ended up re-doing the entire project.

I will activate the saving

I do save all the time though because I find Inkscape does freeze on me a lot or just closes.

I use a mac laptop ... its only 12 months old and I am the only one that uses it and the only one that uses the program.

The exact same thing has happened again tonight and I have saved my work constantly.. it is now telling me that it has no record of the file.

I always save my work as a Inkscape .svg file so I can always go back and alter anything ...

My lap top is full in terms of memory ... could that be a reason why I am having so much trouble?

The instructions you gave to save automatically don't follow my system. What Inkscape are you using ??? I thought I was using the latest but will check that.
So I have not been able to auto save yet... have found the wording you have used but nothing about auto saving.
=
When this happens the program will not let me save any documents that I have open in Inkscape... I have to close everything down and start again.

Oh, yes. If you don't have space, then please save your project to an external drive, like an SD card or a flash drive.
Also try to remove a bit of stuff (or move it somewhere else) as a full hard drive can impact not only the saving and creation of files, but also the way programs behave.

My Inkscape versions are Inkscape 0.91 and 0.92.1 - but it was the same in 0.48.5. You probably have 0.91, which is the only version which currently offers a dmg for installation.

If you'd like me to look for your Autosave, can you make a screenshot of your preferences, with Input/Output selected? It should look something like this: http://i.imgur.com/DPHXMtd.png

Autosave will make the space issue worse, I'd suggest that you've got at least 500Mb free before you start using your computer again for some kind of project.

Kind Regards,
 Maren
